ALWAYS STAND BY YOUR WORD

In the Book of Judges, Jephtah promised the Lord that if God gave him victory in the war against the king of the Ammonites, he would give whatever first came out of his household to God.

God gave him the victory, but lo and behold, when he got back home, the first person who came to welcome him was his daughter and his only child. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, 'Oh no, my daughter!' You have brought me down, and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break. ” (Judges 11)

Instead of negotiating with God, Jephtah chose to fulfill his vow, which was not without its difficulties.

There are many of us who have made vows to the Lord or promised to our friends and family members, but we have failed to keep them because we consider it unfeasible and just ignore them. The psalmist says that one of those who can abide in the Lord's presence are those who swear to their own hurt and do not change (Psalm 15:4). Our goal for the new year and beyond is to be men of integrity by keeping our promises and following through with our commitments, regardless of their weight. The Scriptures say 'But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken’ Matthew 12:36. So it's better not to vow than to vow and not pay (Ecclesiastes 5:5). It's not wise to make promises or pledges that you can't keep because it makes you appear irresponsible. Keep your mouth shut as much as possible.

Integrity is a core value of our God. His promises are fulfilled and he never disappoints (Numbers 23:19). To be considered His child, one must imitate Him. According to Matthew 5:48, we are instructed to be holy in the same manner as God.

If you're not yet acquainted with Christ, come to Him today and let Him lead you away from the life of sin that leads to death and give you eternal life.  'For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’ Romans 6:23.

  1. Thanks for this. It's a powerful reminder in a world where it is becoming very fashionable to make and break promises
