HOLDING ON TO THE HORNS OF THE ALTAR

After Solomon was made king instead of is favorite brother in the person of Adonijah the Scripture says Adonijah was afraid of Solomon so he rushed to the sacred tent and grabbed on to the horns of the altar (1 Kings 1:50), King Solomon spared him but said “If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hair on his head will be touched. But if he makes trouble, he will die.” (1 Kings 1:52).
Running to the altar of God can be our refuge from calamities and evil of this world, the Scripture says ‘He shall cover you with His feathers,And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.’ Psalms 91:4 so beneath His wings we are safe and secure just by His Grace.
But let us look at  General Joab’s case, just like Adonijah he too ran to hold on to the horns of the altar (1 King 2:28) ‘Benaiah went to the sacred tent of the Lord and said to Joab, “The king orders you to come out!”But Joab answered, “No, I will die here.”So Benaiah returned to the king and told him what Joab had said. “Do as he said,” the king replied. “Kill him there beside the altar and bury him. This will remove the guilt of Joab’s senseless murders from me and from my father’s family.’ (1 Kings 2:30-31).
Now let’s go back to what King Solomon said when granting pardon to Adonijah ‘If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hair on his head will be touched’ (1 Kings 1:52) which means that running to the altar or living there doesn’t guarantee your safety if you do not prove your loyalty. Are you asking me to whom? Jesus Christ of course, you must believe and trust in Him For He is the only way and it’s only through Him that you can be saved. For God so love the world that He sent Christ His only son to us. We are protected by His blood which speaks better than Abel’s “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” (Hebrews 12 : 24). Those that believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Know this for sure; Without Christ in your life it’s fruitless effort seeking protection in Him.
