RUN THAT YOU MAY OBTAIN THE PRIZE
Australia's men's 4x400m relay team believed they had earned a spot in the world championship final after setting a new national record of 2:58.00. The team's celebrations were halted soon after when they were disqualified for a wrong changeover. Aidan Murphy's disqualification was caused by taking Reece Holder's baton outside the changeover zone. Although Australian. The run had the potential to break a record that had been in existence since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, which was set by Bruce Frayne, Darren Clark, Gary Minihan, and Rick Mitchell.
The scriptures say in 1 Corinthians .9.24 "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. The scripture says we should 'run in such a way', which means being disciplined and keeping the rules as children of God. For example, you cannot steal to provide for your family just because the Scripture says anyone who doesn't provide for their family is worse than an infidel (2 Timothy 5:8). It is not advisable to forge your results or certificates to be admitted to a school or employed in an organization just because you want to achieve success.
Looking at the situation of this Australian men's 4x400m relay team, they didn't realize their mistake and went on jubilating before their disqualification was announced. The scripture says in Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’. Although these people had prophesied and performed many miracles in Jesus' name, they missed the crown just because they failed to do the will of God, which is the most important thing. It's possible to quote Romans 11:29 as 'For God's gifts and his call cannot be withdrawn', but remember that the giver of the gift can withdraw from you, and without Him, the gift won't go anywhere. Paul concluded 1 Corinthians 9 with this; 'So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. Run your race with purpose, discipline yourself by putting your flesh under control, and always ask for grace to keep God's laws: (Philippians 2:13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him). In the end, you will receive your crown and enter into eternal joy.
Philippians 2:16 Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.
